Having recently returned from Tbilisi, the capital of the former Soviet State of Georgia, I must report on the incredibly friendly and hospitable people. Since the end of the war there, about two years ago, many aspects of life do not function very well (shortage of water, electricity, etc). However, food and drink are excelllent, as is the hospitality. Unfortunately, with the end of the communist regime, prostitution seems almost to have disappeared from the scene. Bars, clubs and hotels do not have any of the old-style Russian whores sitting around any longer, and as the majority of the population is either quite strict Catholic or Muslim, there is not any noticable street or bar action. Do not be too disappointed!!!! .... the local girls, who are all extremely beautiful and friendly, are only too keen to get the chance to talk (in basic English) to a foreigner from the "West", and many will be happy to spend an evening, or night, in your company. Money is neither expected or asked for, but it is always polite to buy the girl a small "gift" or pay her some money for a "taxi" the next morning. =========================================================================== Subject: PROSTITUTION IN GEORGIA Date: Mon, 12 Jan 1998 02:11:36 -0500 Sorry, but the following is hardly true: >Bars, clubs and hotels do not have any of the old-style Russian >whores sitting around any longer, and as the majority of the >population is either quite strict Catholic or Muslim, there is not >any noticable street or bar action. 1. There are many more prostitutes in Georgia now than therw were in Soviet days. 2. There are virtually no Catholics in Georgia, and very few Moslems. (Approx. 90% are Eastern Orthodox, 10% are relatively liberal Sunni Moslem (liberal politically, but not in regards to sex, though). 3. Virtually all prostitutes are Russian and Ukrainian expatriates (he got that one correctly), but you can hardly find a single hotel where they would not jump over you (sometimes competing with each other) begging you to fuck them! Sounds like their rates should be low. No way! $100 is normally the minimum ($300 in more expensive hotels), and a girl can get offended if you try to bargain. I mean it: Not just PLAY being insulted, but for real. She might treat you as "cheap" and refuse to go with you even if you offer double her initial price. (Sounds incredible? Yet it's true). 4. The prettiest are not the most expensive, the ugliest are not the cheapest. 5. Most girls are nice and will treat you nicely, but some are aggressive. Believe it or not, some might treat you the way you would ask yourself who has paid whom! Especially if you look too shy... 6. Try to treat one of these girls badly (to hit her, for example), and you'll have your throat cut (literally) by some of her "nasty boys". They have a very good protection against cruel clients! (And I find it fair; there is no "social security" there, and no one is going to pay for their retirement.)
